The Two Cholesterol Measurement Systems

Cholesterol in the United States is measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Most other countries use millimoles per liter (mmol/L), which is the SI (International System of Units) standard. The conversion factor is: 1 mmol/L = 38.67 mg/dL for total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL. Triglycerides use a different factor: 1 mmol/L = 88.57 mg/dL. The reason the conversion factors differ is that cholesterol and triglycerides have different molecular weights. Millimoles measure the number of molecules, while milligrams measure mass.
