Strip Separators from Your Lists Cleanly

Lists come from everywhere - spreadsheets, databases, APIs, emails, documents - and they almost always arrive with separators you do not want. Commas between items, semicolons, pipes, tabs, dashes, slashes, or custom delimiters that made sense in the source system but are wrong for your destination. The Delete List Separator tool removes whatever separator character your list uses, giving you the raw items without any delimiter clutter. What Separators Can You Remove?

The tool handles every common list separator and any custom character you specify:

Commas - the most common CSV delimiter. Remove them to get one item per line or to prepare items for a different format.

Semicolons - used in European CSV files and in many programming contexts (SQL statements, CSS property lists, shell command chains).

Pipes (|) - common in log files, database exports, and Unix command output.

Tabs - the delimiter in TSV (tab-separated values) files, which are widespread in bioinformatics, linguistics, and data exchange between legacy systems.

Custom characters - tildes, colons, hashes, or any other character that a particular system uses as a delimiter. Specify it, and the Delete List Separator tool strips it out.

How the Tool Works

Paste your separated list into the input field. Select the separator character from the common options or type a custom one. The tool splits the list on that separator, trims whitespace from each item (optionally), and outputs the items in your chosen format: one per line, space-separated, or joined with a new separator of your choice.

The key advantage over a simple find-and-replace is intelligence. A naive search-and-replace of commas would also remove commas that are part of item content (like "Smith, John" in a name field). Common Workflows

Converting between formats. You have a comma-separated list and need it as one item per line for a text file, or vice versa. The tool handles both directions: delete the current separator and output with a new one (or no separator at all).

Preparing SQL IN clauses. You have a list of IDs separated by newlines and need them as a comma-separated list inside parentheses for a SQL query. Remove the newline separators and join with commas to get the format SQL expects.

Cleaning clipboard data. Copy a column from a spreadsheet and it comes as tab-separated values on a single line. Delete the list separator (tab) and replace it with newlines to get one value per line, ready for processing or visual inspection.

Removing decorative separators. Some documents use decorative separators between list items - bullet points, arrows, em dashes, or vertical bars. These look fine in the original document but become noise when you extract the data for another purpose. This tool removes them cleanly.

Normalising data from multiple sources. When combining lists from different systems, each might use a different separator. Standardise them by removing each source's original separator and joining all items with a consistent delimiter.

Preserving Data Integrity

The tool is designed to remove separators without damaging your actual data. It handles quoted strings (items containing the separator character inside quotes are left intact), escaped characters (a backslash before the separator character prevents removal), and empty items (consecutive separators produce empty entries that you can choose to keep or discard).

After processing, the tool shows a count of items found, so you can verify that the number matches your expectation. If you expected 50 items and the tool found 51, you know there is an extra separator or an unexpected split in your data, and you can investigate before proceeding.
