About EAN-8 Barcode Generator
Create Compact EAN-8 Barcodes for Small Products
The EAN-8 Barcode Generator produces the shorter cousin of the standard EAN-13 barcode, specifically designed for products where packaging space is too limited for a full-size barcode. Cigarette packs, candy bars, lip balm tubes, small cosmetics, individual spice packets, and other compact items all benefit from the space-efficient EAN-8 format. This tool generates print-ready EAN-8 barcodes instantly in your browser.
What Sets EAN-8 Apart
While EAN-13 uses 13 digits and is the default for most retail products, EAN-8 encodes only 8 digits, producing a physically smaller barcode that fits on products and labels where the standard size simply won't work. The 8 digits consist of a 2-3 digit country code, a 4-5 digit product identifier, and a check digit. EAN-8 codes are assigned directly by national GS1 organizations and are reserved specifically for items with genuine space constraints.
The format is globally recognized by every point-of-sale system, inventory scanner, and supply chain platform that handles EAN-13. There's no compatibility concern. Retailers, wholesalers, and logistics providers process EAN-8 barcodes identically to their longer counterparts.
Generating Your EAN-8 Barcode
Enter your 7 or 8-digit number. If you provide 7 digits, the tool calculates and appends the check digit automatically. With all 8 digits entered, it validates the check digit for accuracy. The barcode renders as a clean, high-resolution image with optional human-readable numerals. Download and incorporate it into your packaging artwork.
All processing happens locally in your browser. No product data is transmitted externally.
Products and Industries That Rely on EAN-8
Confectionery and snack manufacturers are heavy users of EAN-8. Individual candy bars, gum packs, mints, and single-serve snack bags often have packaging surfaces too small for a full barcode. EAN-8 provides the same scanning functionality in roughly 60% of the space.
Cosmetics and personal care brands face packaging constraints on items like lip balms, eye pencils, nail polish bottles, and sample sizes. The cylindrical or irregularly shaped surfaces of these products make a compact barcode essential for printability and scannability.
Pharmaceutical companies use EAN-8 on small medication packages, especially for individual blister packs, eye drop vials, and sample medications distributed by healthcare providers.
Tobacco products worldwide use EAN-8 extensively due to the small flat surfaces available on cigarette packs and rolling paper packages.
Spice and seasoning brands selling individual packets, sachets, and small jars find EAN-8 indispensable. The labels on these products are often just a few square centimeters, leaving no room for EAN-13.
From Assignment to Shelf
Suppose you manufacture a line of artisanal lip balms in small cylindrical tubes. Your national GS1 office assigns you an EAN-8 number: 4012345 (7 digits, with the check digit to be calculated). You enter this into the EAN-8 Barcode Generator, which produces the barcode for 40123451 (check digit: 1). You download the image, integrate it into your tube label design at the correct size, and send it to print. Every retail scanner in the world will read it correctly.
Sizing and Print Guidelines
The nominal size for an EAN-8 barcode is 26.73mm wide by 21.31mm tall. GS1 allows scaling between 80% and 200% of this nominal size. At minimum magnification, the barcode is just 21.38mm wide, compact enough for the smallest product labels.
Quiet zones (blank margins) are essential. EAN-8 requires a minimum quiet zone of 7 modules on each side. Even though the barcode itself is small, crowding it against text, images, or the edge of a label will cause scan failures.
Color rules match EAN-13: dark bars on a light background with strong contrast. Black on white is ideal, but dark blue, dark green, or black on pastel backgrounds also work. Avoid warm bar colors (red, orange) that red-laser scanners struggle to detect.
Print quality matters more at smaller sizes because printing defects represent a larger proportion of each bar's width. Use the highest print resolution available, and verify scannability with a test print before committing to production quantities.
EAN-8 vs. EAN-13: Choosing the Right One
Don't default to EAN-8 just because it's smaller. GS1 organizations restrict EAN-8 assignment to products with genuine space limitations. If your product can accommodate an EAN-13 barcode, that's the standard to use. EAN-8 numbers are a limited resource because the shorter digit string means fewer available combinations. Use this format only when your packaging truly demands it.
The EAN-8 Barcode Generator is free, instant, and runs entirely in your browser. Generate compact, scannable barcodes for your small-format products in seconds.
