Where Do Day-of-Year Numbers Come From?
The day-of-year numbering system (also called ordinal dates) counts sequentially from January 1st. January 1st is day 1, February 1st is day 32, and December 31st is either day 365 or 366 depending on whether it's a leap year. This system is used more widely than most people realise.
Julian date codes appear on food packaging, pharmaceutical labels, and industrial products. That three-digit number stamped on a can or bottle? It's often the day of the year the product was manufactured. If you see "247" on a package dated 2026, you can find the date by day of year and know it was made on September 4th.

The Leap Year Complication

But in a leap year, February has 29 days instead of 28, which shifts every date from March onward by one day. Day 60 in a leap year is February 29th - a full day earlier in the calendar.
