The Conversion Formula

One mechanical horsepower equals approximately 0.7457 kilowatts. To convert HP to kW, multiply by 0.7457. To go from kW to HP, divide by the same factor (or equivalently, multiply by 1.341). Note that there are several definitions of horsepower – mechanical (imperial), metric, electrical, and boiler. This calculator uses the most common mechanical horsepower (550 foot-pounds per second), which is the standard for engines and motors in imperial contexts.

Electric vehicle manufacturers often list power in both units, but budget EV brands sometimes list only kW, leaving HP-accustomed buyers needing a converter.

In industrial settings, motor specifications might come in either unit depending on the manufacturer's country of origin. A pump manufacturer in Germany rates their products in kW, while an American competitor uses HP. Facility engineers sourcing replacement motors need to convert accurately to ensure the new motor matches the old one's power output. Over-specifying wastes energy and money; under-specifying leads to equipment failure.

HVAC engineers converting between HP and kW when sizing compressors, fans, and chillers encounter this daily. A 5 HP compressor is about 3.73 kW – that difference matters when calculating electrical loads and sizing circuit breakers.

The difference is about 1.4 percent. For casual comparisons it's negligible, but for engineering calculations or regulatory compliance it can matter. European automotive ratings typically use metric HP, so if you're converting a European car's PS rating, you'd technically need the metric factor.
