These adjustments reflect the embryo's actual developmental stage and tend to produce a more accurate estimated due date than the LMP method alone.

Understanding the IVF Timeline

An IVF cycle involves several distinct phases, and knowing where due date calculation fits into the bigger picture can reduce anxiety and help you communicate more effectively with your healthcare team:

Ovarian stimulation - Fertility medications encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs over a period of roughly 8 to 14 days. During this phase, the LMP-based calculation is already diverging from a natural cycle.

Egg retrieval - Mature eggs are collected in a minor surgical procedure. This is typically considered equivalent to ovulation in a natural cycle.

Fertilisation and culture - Eggs are fertilised in the lab and cultured for 3 to 5 days before the strongest embryo is selected for transfer.

Embryo transfer - The selected embryo is placed in the uterus. This is the date that gives the most accurate due date calculation.

The two-week wait - After transfer, you wait approximately 10 to 14 days before a blood test confirms pregnancy. Once confirmed, the IVF due date becomes your first major planning milestone.

What Your Due Date Actually Means

A due date is an estimate, not an appointment. Only about 4 percent of babies arrive on their exact due date. Most are born within a window of two weeks before to two weeks after. Your obstetrician will use the due date alongside ultrasound measurements, especially the dating scan at 8 to 12 weeks, to refine the timeline as your pregnancy progresses.

For IVF pregnancies specifically, research published in the journal Fertility and Sterility has shown that calculating from the transfer date produces due date estimates that align more closely with actual delivery dates than the LMP method. If your doctor adjusts your due date after an early ultrasound, that is completely normal and does not indicate any problem.
