The Rules Are Not as Simple as You Think

Most people know the basic rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year. But that is only the first rule. The complete set of rules is:

Rule 1: If the year is divisible by 4, it is a leap year.

Rule 2: EXCEPT if the year is also divisible by 100, in which case it is NOT a leap year.

Rule 3: EXCEPT if the year is also divisible by 400, in which case it IS a leap year after all.

This means 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4, not by 100). 1900 was NOT a leap year (divisible by 4 and by 100, but not by 400). And 2000 WAS a leap year (divisible by 4, by 100, AND by 400). These exception rules are what trip people up and make this tool more useful than it might initially seem.

Why Leap Years Exist

The Earth takes approximately 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun - not exactly 365. Without leap years, our calendar would slowly drift out of alignment with the seasons. After just 100 years, the calendar would be off by about 24 days. After 700 years, what we call June would be happening in December. Leap years correct for this drift by adding an extra day (February 29th) every four years, with the century exceptions fine-tuning the correction.

Even with the current system, there is a tiny remaining error of about 26 seconds per year. Over thousands of years, this will accumulate enough to require further correction - but for practical purposes over the next several millennia, the current leap year rules keep our calendar accurate to within a day.
