Why Frame Sizing Is More Complex Than It Seems

The "size" of a picture frame isn't a single number. There are at least four different measurements involved: the image size (the actual dimensions of the picture), the mat opening (the window cut into the matboard that the image shows through), the mat outer dimensions (which match the frame inner dimensions), and the frame outer dimensions (including the width of the frame molding itself). Getting any of these measurements wrong leads to problems. A mat opening that's too large shows the edges of the image or the tape holding it in place. A mat opening that's too small crops important parts of the picture. A frame that's slightly too small won't fit the assembled package of glass, mat, image, and backing. Choosing the Right Mat Width

The mat is the colored border between the image and the frame, and its width dramatically affects the visual impact of the framing. Standard mat widths range from 1.5 inches to 4 inches, with 2 to 3 inches being the most common choice for most artwork sizes. Larger pieces can support wider mats, while smaller pieces look best with proportionally narrower mats.

A common design convention is to make the bottom mat margin slightly wider than the top and sides, typically by about half an inch. This compensates for an optical illusion that makes evenly matted pieces look slightly bottom-heavy. Standard Frame Sizes vs. Custom Frames

Standard frame sizes (8x10, 11x14, 16x20, etc.) are widely available and significantly cheaper than custom frames. If you have an 8x10 image and want to use a 16x20 frame, the calculator tells you exactly what mat margins you'll have (3 inches on each side for equal margins, or various asymmetric options).

Custom framing is expensive, so knowing the precise measurements before you visit the frame shop saves time and prevents the costly back-and-forth of incorrect orders.

Calculating Glass and Backing Material

The glass (or acrylic glazing) and backing board must match the frame's interior dimensions exactly. Our picture frame calculator provides these dimensions as part of its output, which is especially useful if you're cutting your own glass or ordering pre-cut pieces. For conservation framing of valuable artwork, the glass dimensions also determine the cost of UV-protective glazing, which is priced by area.
