About Time Calculator
Add, Subtract, and Calculate Time Differences Effortlessly
Time arithmetic sounds simple until you actually try it. Adding 2 hours and 47 minutes to 10:35 PM, or figuring out how many hours and minutes sit between a start time and an end time that crosses midnight - these calculations trip people up constantly because our base-60 time system does not behave like the base-10 numbers we are used to. The Time Calculator handles all of this instantly, supporting both 12-hour and 24-hour formats so you get the right answer every single time.
What You Can Do with This Tool
The calculator supports three core operations that cover virtually every time arithmetic need:
Add time. Start with a time value and add hours, minutes, and optionally seconds to it. The result accounts for AM/PM rollovers and date changes automatically. Need to know what time it will be 6 hours and 45 minutes from now? Enter the current time, add the duration, and you have your answer.
Subtract time. Remove a duration from a given time to find out when something started. If a meeting ended at 4:20 PM and lasted 1 hour 50 minutes, subtracting gives you a start time of 2:30 PM. The calculator handles backward rollovers past midnight just as smoothly as forward ones.
Find the difference. Enter two times and the tool tells you exactly how many hours, minutes, and seconds separate them. This is the feature people use most often for timesheets, billing, and scheduling.
12-Hour and 24-Hour Format Support
Different industries and different countries favour different time formats. Hospitals and the military use 24-hour time. Most American civilians use 12-hour time with AM and PM. Europeans and many Asian countries lean toward 24-hour notation in writing but often speak in 12-hour terms.
This time calculator lets you input in whichever format you prefer and toggle the output between formats. You can even mix them - enter a start time in 12-hour format and an end time in 24-hour format - and the tool normalises everything behind the scenes. No more mental conversions from 15:30 to 3:30 PM; the tool does it for you.
Everyday Uses You Might Not Have Considered
Payroll and timesheets. Employees clock in at 8:47 AM and clock out at 5:12 PM. What is the total shift duration? The time difference function answers this in one step: 8 hours 25 minutes. Multiply across days and employees, and you have accurate payroll data.
Cooking and baking. A recipe says to start the roast 4 hours and 15 minutes before dinner at 7 PM. When should you put it in the oven? Subtract 4:15 from 19:00 and you get 2:45 PM. No more overcooked or undercooked meals because you miscounted the hours.
Exercise tracking. You ran intervals of 4 minutes 30 seconds, 5 minutes 10 seconds, 4 minutes 55 seconds, and 5 minutes 25 seconds. Adding those up by hand is tedious. Feed them into the time addition calculator and get the total in seconds.
Travel planning. Your flight departs at 22:40 and lands at 06:15 the next day. How long is the flight? The difference calculator handles the overnight crossover correctly: 7 hours 35 minutes, assuming no time zone change.
Project management. Estimating task durations often involves adding up smaller sub-task estimates. If research takes 2 hours 30 minutes, drafting takes 3 hours 15 minutes, and review takes 1 hour 45 minutes, the total is 7 hours 30 minutes - and this tool computes it without a spreadsheet.
Why Base-60 Arithmetic Is Tricky
We count time in base 60: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour. But we instinctively try to do arithmetic in base 10. When you add 45 minutes to 30 minutes, the correct answer is 1 hour and 15 minutes, not 75 minutes left as-is. This mismatch is the root of most time calculation errors, and it compounds when you stack multiple additions or work with hours, minutes, and seconds simultaneously.
The Time Calculator eliminates this class of error entirely. It converts everything to a common unit internally, performs the arithmetic, and converts back into a human-friendly format. You get precision without the mental overhead.
