What Is an XML Sitemap and Why Does It Matter?
An XML sitemap is a structured file that tells search engine crawlers which pages on your site exist, when they were last modified, how often they change, and how important they are relative to other pages. For small sites with solid internal linking, a sitemap is helpful but not critical. For larger sites - e-commerce stores with thousands of product pages, news outlets publishing daily, or web applications with dynamically generated content - a sitemap is essential. How This Tool Works
The workflow is deliberately simple because generating a sitemap should not require installing software or configuring a CMS plugin:

What Makes a Good Sitemap
Not every URL on your site belongs in the sitemap. Including low-value pages dilutes the signal you are sending to search engines. Here are the guidelines that SEO professionals follow:
Include: All canonical, indexable pages - your homepage, category pages, product pages, blog posts, landing pages, and any other content you want Google to rank.
Exclude: Paginated archives (page 2, page 3, etc.), search results pages, admin and login pages, pages blocked by robots.txt or noindex tags, duplicate pages, and parameter-heavy URLs that do not represent unique content.
Keep it current. An outdated sitemap is almost worse than no sitemap at all. If you add or remove pages regularly, regenerate and re-upload your sitemap on a schedule - weekly or monthly, depending on how frequently your content changes.
Submitting Your Sitemap to Search Engines
Once you have generated the file, upload it to the root directory of your website so it is accessible at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Then submit it through:

Common Sitemap Mistakes to Avoid
Exceeding the 50,000 URL limit. The Sitemaps Protocol caps each file at 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. If your site is larger, you need a sitemap index file that references multiple individual sitemaps. This tool handles large lists by automatically splitting them into compliant chunks.
Including non-200 URLs. Every URL in your sitemap should return a 200 OK status code. Including 301 redirects, 404 errors, or 500 server errors wastes crawl budget and makes your sitemap look poorly maintained. Validate your URLs before generating.
Setting all priorities to 1.0. Priority is a relative signal within your own site. If everything is priority 1.0, nothing is prioritised. Use the full range: 1.0 for the homepage, 0.8 for key category pages, 0.6 for blog posts, 0.4 for supplementary pages.
