Technical Specifications and Best Practices

EAN-13 barcodes have specific size requirements for reliable scanning. The standard module width is 0.33mm, producing a barcode approximately 37.29mm wide and 25.93mm tall at 100% magnification. GS1 guidelines allow scaling between 80% and 200% of nominal size. Printing below 80% risks scan failures, especially on lower-quality printers.

Ensure adequate quiet zones (the blank space on either side of the barcode). The left quiet zone must be at least 11 modules wide, and the right must be at least 7 modules. Crowding text or graphics into these zones will prevent scanners from reading the barcode.

Print in high contrast. Black bars on a white background is the gold standard. Dark blue or dark green on white also work well. Avoid red, orange, or yellow for the bars, as many barcode scanners use red lasers that can't distinguish these colors from the background.

Always verify your printed barcodes with a scanner before committing to a full production run. A barcode that looks perfect to the eye may have subtle printing artifacts that cause scan failures in real-world conditions.
