What Is an ISBN Barcode?

Placement and Design Standards

Publishing industry convention places the ISBN barcode in the lower right area of the back cover. The standard size is approximately 50.93mm wide by 36.86mm tall (including the human-readable text), though exact placement and sizing should follow your printer's specifications.

The barcode should print in black on a white rectangle. If your back cover design uses a dark or busy background, place the barcode on a white rectangle with adequate padding. Most cover templates include a designated barcode area for this purpose.

Some publishers include a secondary barcode to the right of the ISBN barcode that encodes the price (using the EAN-5 supplement format). This price barcode is optional and not generated by all tools, but some retailers find it useful for automated pricing at the register.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
