Yet most people describe their face as simply "round" or "long" without understanding the specific geometric category it falls into. The Face Shape Calculator analyses your facial measurements and identifies your shape from the seven recognised categories: oval, round, square, rectangular (oblong), heart, diamond, and triangle.
The Seven Face Shapes Explained
Oval: Slightly longer than wide, with a gently narrowing jawline and forehead. Considered the most versatile shape for styling because almost everything works with it. The forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, and the cheekbones are the widest point.
Round: Width and length are approximately equal, with soft, curved lines and full cheeks. The cheekbones are the widest measurement, and neither the forehead nor jaw has strong angular definition.
Square: Width and length are similar, but with a strong, angular jawline and a broad forehead. The jaw, cheekbones, and forehead are close to the same width, creating a structured, defined appearance.
Rectangular (Oblong): Noticeably longer than wide, with a relatively uniform width from forehead through jaw. Similar proportions to a square face but stretched vertically.
Heart: A wider forehead and cheekbones that taper to a narrower, sometimes pointed chin. The forehead is the widest part of the face. Some classifications call this an inverted triangle.
Diamond: Narrow forehead and jawline with wide, prominent cheekbones. The cheekbones are significantly wider than both the forehead and the jaw, creating a distinctive angular appearance.
Triangle (Pear): A wider jawline that narrows upward through the cheekbones to a relatively narrow forehead. The opposite of a heart shape.
How to Take Your Measurements
You need four measurements, taken with a soft tape measure or a piece of string that you then measure against a ruler:
Forehead width: Measure across the widest part of your forehead, typically between the outer edges of your eyebrows.
Cheekbone width: Measure across the top of your cheekbones, from the outer corner of one eye to the other. This is usually the widest part of most faces.
Jawline width: Measure from the tip of your chin to below your ear at the angle of your jaw, then double that number. Alternatively, measure straight across from jaw angle to jaw angle.
Face length: Measure from the centre of your hairline straight down to the tip of your chin.
How the Calculator Analyses Your Shape
The calculator compares the ratios between these four measurements. If your face length is notably greater than your cheekbone width, your shape trends toward rectangular or oval. If your cheekbone width dominates and your jaw and forehead are both narrow, you have a diamond shape. Equal width and length with a strong jaw suggests square.
